Bourette Silk

Our bourette silks are available in light and transparent, tightly woven or jersey versions. Depending on the design, they are suitable for a wide range of uses from clothing, interior design and decoration to massage or sauna towels.

Our dyed bourette jerseys are dyed with vegetable colours from pomegranate, white mulberry leaves, gerbera acacia (catechu) and marigold. Myrabolan and gall apples were used as mordants. The centuries-old art of dyeing anchors the colours in the fibre in elaborate work steps and ensures a colour effect that cannot be imitated with synthetic dyes.

Bourette silk comes from the short fibres in the outer and innermost area of the cocoon of a mulberry silkworm. It cannot be completely de-basted; a small part of the silk glue and cocoon remains give this silk its special structure and surface. Especially when wet, the silk glue gives this material its characteristic scent, which fades over time and can vary in intensity. This silk glue is said to have a natural healing effect, which has an anti-inflammatory and soothing effect on the skin and is used especially in massage gloves in Ayurveda.

The matt yarn has an irregular, slightly nubby structure and is much fuller than smooth silk, it is hard-wearing, warms well and is easy to dye or paint.
